Media richness has become something of a buzzword, and that’s no coincidence, because what media richness means is making a message as personal as possible, whether it’s an one-on-one conversation, a department meeting, a speech before an all-hands gathering or at a management conference, but also a TV interview or your video message on the internet, meaning the media that is becoming more and more important by the day. The question is, how do you make sure you reach people personally?
The secret is to enrich your words and that you don’t just read them a text. Get involved emotionally. Try to feel your staff, your customers, your shareholders and their worries, fear and hopes. Build a bridge to them. If you get a feel for your audience, they will get a feel for you, too. Look to your audience when you speak. Use the camera as a channel and visualize the people listening and watching. Though it may sound strange, try to reach for your audience with your eyes. This is how you enrich your message. And a rich message is one that will reach people really well.
